Day 1 - June 9, 2023 - Friday - Arrival day - This afternoon our group of 15 arrived at the Vagar Airport in the Faroe Islands. We were met by our tour guide Per Hansen and our first stop on our exploration of the island of Vagar was Helga’s house for some wonderful homemade Faroese fish soup. Helga’s home, which has been in her family for many years, was built in 1861 and overlooks the Sorvagsfjordur bay. We learned about their culture and history while Helga’s mother brought out her spinning and knitting, and we saw many of the Faroese sheep skins on display.
Then on to Gasadalur to see the lovely Mulafossur waterfall. After a lovely stroll through town, we headed to Torshavn, located on the island of Streymoy, and the lovely Hotel Brandon where we spent the next several nights. We enjoyed a lovely group dinner and then - off the bed!
Day 2 - June 10, 2023 - Saturday - Tour of Torshavn and Nolsoy After a wonderful breakfast at the Hotel Brandon, we toured downtown Torshavn with our guide Per, starting in the lovely Vidarlundin Park at the National Art Gallery, Listasavn Foroya. We learned about the history of the town, the Parliament, and visited a few shops along the way including Gudrun and Gudrun, the Craft Co-op, and Snaeldan.
At the harbor we boarded the ferry for Nolsoy, where we experienced first hand - a hen party for men! Our heimablidni (lunch in the Faroese style of eating in someone’s home) was at Maude’s house. The meal was memorable, with fantastic food, stories of the area and Maude’s life experience growing up in Nolsoy. A tour around the island included visiting the boat of Ove Joensen, the ‘Nolsoy’, the Princess ruins, a museum of a traditional Faroese home, and a geology tour of the back of the island. After our ferry ride back we had a lovely tapas dinner and beer at the Oy, the local beer brewery. Another lovely day!
Day 3 - June 11, 2023 - Sunday - Tour of Mykines - Today’s adventure took us to the island of Mykines, the bird island. And the many birds we saw included the Puffin, Arctic tern, Guillemot, Oyster Catcher, Kittiwake, both the Great Skua and Arctic Skua, and the Snipe - what an amazing sound!
A great trip, one that I would recommend to friends!

And then we all headed back to town where dinner was on our own, some of us had the fortune to try out Roks, the sister restaurant to Koks, which is no longer in the Faroe Islands - a lovely way to end the day!
Day 4 - June 12, 2023 - Monday - Hike from Saksun to Tjornuvik - Today was our big hike day from Saksun to Tjornuvik and what a beautiful day for it, not a cloud in the sky! We started the day in Saksun, where we had a guided tour of the Duvugardar Farm Museum, one of the best examples of an old original farm house in the Faroe Islands.
From there we started our day-long hike, and the views were amazing! On our arrival in Tjornuvik, we all had a lovely break with coffee and waffles - and for some a lovely stroll on the sandy beach, with great views of Risin and Kellingin Sea Stacks - and then back to Torshavn.
Day 5 - June 13, 2023 - Tuesday - Kirkjubour and Vestmanna Bird Cliffs - Another sunny day in Faroe! This morning we left Torshavn for a hike to the southernmost village on Streymoy, Kirkjubour, one of Faroe’s most important historical sites, with the ruins of the Magnus Cathedral from around 1300, St Olav’s Church from the 12th century, and the old farmhouse of Kirkjoboargardur from the 11th century.
Kirkjubour is also the current home of the artist Trondur Patursson. Along the way we stopped at Reynsmulalag for our open air meeting with our leader Per. We had wonderful views of Sandoy as well as the islands of Hester and Koltur. After a quick bite to eat we then headed to Vestmanna for our boat tour of the sea cliffs. And what a ride we had!
Day 6 - June 14, 2023 - Wednesday - Cultural Night in Gjogv - Today folks had free time this morning to shop or visit the local museums. Marci started out with a group to visit Tórshavn’s National Museum for some wonderful exhibits including the Pew ends from St. Olaf’s Church in Kirkjubour and the open air exhibit including a stroll through the Botanical Gardens. Then on to the Listasavn Foroya, the Art Museum in Torshavn, full of lovely art and sculpture, including the Deep Blue by Trondur Patursson.
Later in the afternoon we headed over to the island of Eysturoy, our first stop being the art studio of Sigurd Gunnarsdottir in Eidi - what a talented artist! We heard stories about her life and art.
And then to Gjogv for a cultural night at the Gjaargardur Guesthouse, including live music, traditional foods and traditional line dancing, a wonderful way to spend an evening in Faroe!
Day 7 - June 15, 2023 - Thursday - Hike Klakkur Mountain and Blasastova - Our last day in Faroe - the morning started out pretty misty and foggy as we started out for Klakkur Mountain in Klasvik, our hike for today, but it lifted as we were ascending to the top, truly magical.
After our hike we headed to the town of Blasastova for a lovely lunch at the Blasastova Museum. We were surprised by a visit from the designer of Hallbera, who brought several of her sweaters and accessories for us to purchase - and a shopping frenzy ensued!
After a tour of the museum and town, we headed back to Torshavn for a lovely dinner at the Katrina Christiansen Restaurant for a tapas dinner with wonderful food inspired from the Faroese tradition.
And then a lovely afternoon walk to the home of singer, songwriter and composer Elin Brimheim Heinesen for a home concert none of us will ever forget - a wonderful way to end our tour of the Faroe Islands!
How do you repeat such an exceptional trip? I seriously only have good memories... Ingrid V., Faroe Islands 2023
Day 8, June 16, 2023 - Friday - Depart Faroe - Today we sadly departed from Faroe. Our next stop - Copenhagen. And what a lovely city, so much to see and do! On arrival, we settled into our lovely quayside hotel, the Copenhagen Admiral Hotel, a former warehouse renovated into this lovely hotel and located on the water across from the Opera House. Folks were on their own tonight to stroll the city and dine.
Day 9, June 17, 2023 - Saturday - Tour outside Copenhagen - Today we headed out on our all day tour outside of Copenhagen with our guide Benji. Our first stop was the Roskilde Cathedral where we toured both inside and out.
Our next stop was the Viking Museum, where we were able to see the Viking long boat remains from the harbor, with great demonstrations on rope making and building long boats.
Frederiksborg Slot was beautiful, and we were there for three weddings, but fortunately we were able to sneak into the chapel between them.
We ended the day with a tour of Kronborg Slot, known for Hamlet which was inspired by the Danish legendary hero Amled and…Kronborg.
Day 10, June 18, 2023 - Sunday - Free day in Copenhagen - Today was our last day in Copenhagen. Folks were on their own to explore the city, meet up with friends, and ….shop! Some travelers spent the day with Marci and Amy - their first stop was a walk to see the little mermaid and stroll through the old Naval Barracks, built for the Royal Danish Navy in 1641.
Then on through Amalienborg and the Marble Church to the boat canal for a lovely tour around town.
Then a lovely lunch in Christianshavn for Faroese salmon! Some braved the tower climb up Ver Frelsers Kirk and viewed the elephant organ, then to Christiansborg Slot, Rosenborg Slot and the Botanical Gardens.
I enjoy learning about the history, people and cultures of places I visit and this trip included tons of opportunities to do so. Laurie L., Faroe 2023
And then a leisurely stroll back to our Hotel for an outdoor afternoon Symphony concert at the opera House. Folks were again on their own for dinner - so many wonderful restaurants to choose from!
Day 11, June 19, 2023 - Monday - Depart Copenhagen - Today we all headed to the airport and said farewell to Copenhagen….and Faroe!
The accommodations and meals were just great. I loved all of the hikes, all of the local culture we experienced and local artists we met, all of the historic sites we visited!
